What to feed squirrels

Wild squirrels benefit from eating a variety of natural foods, which they will forage for daily.

Walnuts, pecans, almonds, and hazelnuts are among the healthiest options for occasional feeding, as they provide energy and nutrients. Dry corn, sunflower seeds, unshelled peanuts, carrots, and pumpkin seeds are okay once in a while. Avoid salted or roasted foods. Do not feed squirrels Brazil nuts, as they have toxic amounts of selenium. Finally, avoid feeding squirrels at all where it is illegal to do so.

When given large nuts, especially ones with intact shells, squirrels are likely to bury them. When food is unsuitable for burial, or they are hungry, squirrels will eat right away.

If you feed the same squirrels often, which runs the risk of making them dependent on you as a source of food, you should ideally provide a balanced diet involving fruits, vegetables, and multiple types of nuts and seeds.

How to feed squirrels

Squirrels are likely to find food left outdoors. You can also toss food near a squirrel, although they won't always see it. Squirrels are frightened by sudden movements, including tossing food when they are nearby. I don't recommend letting squirrels eat food out of your hand, due to the risk of them accidentally biting you.
